As an exploration in modular type design, our design class was tasked with picking a band/music artist and then designing a modular logotype for the musician of our choosing. For this assignment, I selected the magical and mystical SPELLLING: an experimental

pop-fusion project created by Chrystia Cabral.

Given the witchy and theatrical nature of Cabral's music, I felt that leaning into blackletter typefaces of the past would be incredibly fitting. I also felt it was important to create a monogram of the triple "lll's" since they are a notable and unique element of SPELLLING's name. The star motif in the "i" was used as a baseline for all of the corners of each letterforms.

This is the project that helped me fall in love with modular type and designing my own custom letterforms!
